A Companion for an Open-Hearted Life

The Book of Awakening by Mark Nepo has been around a long time. Maybe it’s on your bookshelf too.

If you’re new to this one, let me start with the practical elements.  This is a book of daily readings. Each date begins with a quote followed by a personal story or a reflection on stories from various wisdom traditions. At the end of each daily entry is a practice that expands on the topic that’s been explored that day.

So, those are the simple facts. Daily reflections. Poignant stories. Personal practices. But that doesn’t come close to expressing what’s so lovely about this book.

Mark is a poet, philosopher and teacher and you can hear the influence from all of those in his writing. More importantly, you can hear a deep expression of an open heart. His words invite you into presence and awareness in the midst of the vast & changing qualities of life. If you’re on a path of exploration, curiosity and presence – The Book of Awakening is a remarkable companion and guide.
This book has been such a companion for me. It’s accompanied me for many years, through many changes, and still its wisdom is vibrant and steadfast. It has reminded me to find beauty in confusion, hope in impermanence and peace in turmoil.
The Book of Awakening offers a year of insights that manage to stay fresh year, after year, after year.

“It seems the ancient Medicine Men understood that listening to another’s story somehow gives us the strength of example to carry on, as well as showing us aspects of ourselves we can’t easily see. For listening to the stories of others—not to their precautions or personal commandments—is a kind of water that breaks the fever of our isolation. If we listen closely enough, we are soothed into remembering our common name.”
